A Thin Place of a Church
We all need safe and holy spots, places where we feel that we belong; places where the world is a little closer to what it ought to be all the time, everywhere.
We all need thin places: spots where the wall between earth and heaven is thin, nearly invisible: where we can catch glimpses of God’s will for us all: love and hope and courage and patience and joy. And not only catch glimpses, but actually feel as if we can taste these things here and now.
There are very few days (maybe five a year) when I don’t look forward to coming to work: few days when I am unaware of how fortunate I am to be pastor of this church. Visitors often tell me how much they like the worship services: I reply, “This is the funnest church I’ve ever been around.” But of course I mean more than just fun: a place of hope and delight.
Bonnie Raitt sings a song (from a Disney movie in fact), “Will the Sun Ever Shine Again?” This church is a reminder to me, and to so many, that the sun will shine again, and that Jesus was a dreamer whose dream comes true: and it comes true at least a little bit here.
Our goal, for ourselves and visitors; for young and old alike, is to help make our church a thin place for everyone who enters. Together, we become a sign that God is here with us. In blessing others, we are blessed.
